Unlike the last time I rode this event, this time I was riding with a few mates from work. Since selling my road bike some time ago I’ve not really had chance to replace it so I swapped the knobbly tyres off the Rodwell for some fast and grippy Michelin Pro Race 2’s.

We all met up in Grasmere ready for the 9am start but it was postponed until 9:30 due to ice on the road – well it was better than last time when the start was delayed by 3 months! The route had been altered at the last minute too, presumably to avoid a completely treacherous section.

As we waited for the start, getting colder and colder, I noticed a few other riders who were evidently in this for the ‘full winter experience’. One guy in our group was wearing fingerless gloves. Another bloke was wearing triathlon shoes with no socks. As if in an attempt to outdo the people riding full suspension mountain bikes in a 60 mile road event, one chap arrived in full GB kit astride a Specialized time trail bike – deep section aero rims, carbon tri bars, etc. He set off like a bullet but I expect it was a bit of a handful at times (maybe I’m wrong).

In contrast, the Rodwell proved to be just as good as my old road bike in events like this – surefooted going down, a breeze on the climbs, no noticeable flex when I ‘stomped’ hard on the flat bits but also all-day comfortable. Everything you want in a sportive bike really. Not bad for a bike apparently designed for 60 minutes of mud.

To start with I behaved myself. I rode with the group as much as possible, I even had conversations. Whenever I found myself a long way out in front I’d slow down or stop and let everyone catch up, then carry on the chatting. It was ace – I was able to look around, take in the scenery and appreciate the majesty of the lakes on a crisp winter’s day. I did put the hammer down on a couple of occasions, just before and straight after the tea and cake stop but generally I was a good boy.

At the top of the final climb in Grizedale I stopped to wait for the group and noticed that Nick wasn’t with them. Apparently he was last spotted dropping off the back of the group in obvious glycogen shortage. Knowing from experience how much worse hitting the wall can be if you’re riding on your own, I decided to hang about and wait for him.

Eventually Nick appeared. I asked him to eat all of his remaining food and we rode together to the finish, some 10 miles away.

We eventually reached the finish back in Grasmere 5 and a bit hours after we had set off. The last time I did this I finished in 3:23 including a cake stop. Still, it was a damn good day out.

Another piece of the jigsaw arrived today in the form of a pair of ice tyres – I’ve been riding on patches of ice quite a lot recently during my regular late-night training rides but I’m going to need something a bit better than mud tyres for potentially 24 hours of the stuff. Hopefully I’ll get to try them out soon if the cold spell kicks in properly…

Road ride last night with Phil. I’d not seen Phil since the 3 Peaks so I was looking forward to the catch-up. We decided to meet up in Bury, ride over to Rochdale, Littleborough, climb Bacup Rd the towards Burnley via the road across the moors (by the Singing Ringing Tree) the down through Rawtenstall and home.

The first hour or so was great – quite a hefty tailwind and an average speed of about 28mph through Walsden. Once we started to climb towards Bacup though, things got very interesting….

As we gradually gained altitude over the 3 mile or so climb, the weather got gradually worse. The already-strong wind started to really gust, it was now a side-wind too so remaining in control was challenging to say the least. The rain was getting heavier, in fact by the time we neared the summit of the climb visibility was very poor mainly because lifting my head up from a facing-down position resulted in heavy rain being blasted straight at it, like being attacked with one of those crowd control water cannons.

The water cannoning got worse and worse as we rode over the top of the hill and started the descent to Bacup. Grovelling down the hill, we both had heads tilted to catch the full force of the deluge on the tops of our heads, bodies completly soaking but by now laughing uncontrollably.

We sensibly cut the route short at this point and took the most direct route home – by now our average speed had dropped a fair bit and we were both getting cold – having to put in extra effort just to stay warm and maintain a reasonable pace into what was now a pretty fierce headwind.

After going our seperate ways in Ramsbottom I carried on as quickly as I could back through the deserted centre of Bury, arriving home just before uncontrollable shivering set in.

More heavy rain, very strong winds and general weather misery had been forecast for last weekend. In fact the forecasts were so poor and followed such a nasty week of weather, floods, damage and widespread chaos that Dave and I had agreed that despite our plans to ride a record-breaking Daft Ride (yes, there is a record that needs beating), we should lower our ambitions for the time being and embark on a more straightforward route involving lower risk and no complicated logistics.

So I arrived at Dave’s house on Saturday morning with my cross bike, regular kit for a day in the hills and a Gore-Tex jacket. The only thing missing so far was rain….

We set off along a mixture of suburban streets, dual carriageways and cycle paths past allotments that looked like shanty towns, finally arriving on nice country lanes I think towards Longridge. I say ‘I think’ as I’m not entirely sure what route we took. I know that we went to Pendle and climbed some really steep hills near there (in fact once we started climbing we didn’t really stop) and I know that a lot of the roads that we rode were quite remote. The route included a very long rocky bridleway across a fell – I dunno, this is useless! I can’t say for certain which fell it was but it was near Dunsop Fell. All will be explained soon I’m sure.

What I do know is that after 4 hours or so of not being rained on, the rain finally arrived. Hail at first, then just a good old soaking. In some ways I was glad to see the rain as I’d taken the trouble to wear a waterproof (which I hate doing). As we pressed on into the wind, Dave helpfully pointed out the many sights and landmarks that we would have been able to see from our various high vantage points but were unable to do so due to the constant shroud of grey mist – it was like a Radio 4 serial, the audible descriptions allowing the imagination to take over (I was imagining views of snow-capped alps, funfairs and herds of wildebeest though).

Dunsop Fell was left alone for another day – the saturated ground would have made this a soggy slog across a barren moor – so we stopped for a brew and a cake in Dunsop Bridge then pressed on back towards Preston. 99.3 miles later, we arrived back where we started…less than a mile short of a century but almost 10,000 feet of ascent gained in the last 8 hours. Like I said, we climbed a lot.

In spite of my gung-ho previous post, we’ve decided that due to the severe flooding at the moment we may struggle to get to the start of the planned daft ride and back from the finish too, given we’d need to drive through the middle of some pretty badly affected (and rather remote) areas. We’d obviously complete the ride itself, no problems

So….we’re going to do a part road, part off-road Daft Ride instead. A bit closer to home but still very big. What is guaranteed is that we’re going to get wet….

Dave and I have got another huge Daft Ride planned for this weekend. If the epic-ness of past Daft Rides are anything to go by, this one promises to be BIG.

The weather forecast however suggests that it’s going to be very wet, very windy and possibly pushing the daftness much closer to the ’stupidity barrier’ than ever before. In fact, there’s a ’severe weather warning’ for the next few days for most of the area we’ll be riding.

We’d be silly to attempt such a big ride across such wild and desolate terrain in those conditions – there are 5 ‘major ford crossings’ that might just be deeper than they usually are, it’s likely that the wind will be right in our faces for most of the route, the weather in the last couple of weeks will make sure that the route will be very muddy in lots of places, not to mention the relentless climbing. It’s long enough to ensure we start and finish in darkness too.

Sod it we thought, after several nanoseconds of pondering. It’ll be ace, Let’s do it.

Yesterday must have been some kind of ‘Let’s a ll drive like knobheads’ day. I rode a regular route from here across to Oldham, Stalybridge, Glossop, Hayfield and over to Macc via some big ‘orrible climbs. It was pouring with rain, it was getting dark and it was very windy.

With this in mind I was using my brightest lights front and back and was also wearing a bright orange jacket. No matter, everyone was denying my existence anyway, pulling out, pulling across, turning left in front of me, the usual bollocks. One woman wound her window down to demonstrate with her stinking potty mouth just how much class she had after I had shouted “NO!” at her as she strarted to drive her car across my path.

It must be the fact that these people are sat in the safety of their cars that they think it’s ok to shout abuse, wave fingers, ignore cyclists because if they did this to someone face-to-face they’d probably get a slap.

Eventually I left the pillocks and their cars behind and arrived at the proper hills. It was completely dark by now and the wind had picked up. The horizontal rain had also returned and stayed with me until I reached Prestbury where a cottage pie was waiting My toes were frozen – time to dig out the overshoes again….

It’s about time I got back into regular ‘big’ rides after a couple of months of short(ish) rides, turbo training, running and sometime quite frustrating levels of inconsistency. What I need right now are regular doses of several hours off road, more than a couple of smaller loops linked together requiring a bit more planning, plenty of hills, a good deal more effort and spare batteries for the lights. Last night was quite large, getting on for 4 hours, 3 regular rides spliced together to form one big endurance training extravaganza. For the full Strathpuffer training effect it was also cold, damp and quite foggy (foggy on the moors anyway).

To give me an extra kick up the arse I rode the ‘maybe-to-tall-gear’ Uber-Niche Ghetto 96er Singlespeed and set off along the road and then onto the cobbled tracks to Birtle. I knew the climb was going to be horrible but luckily I managed to reach the top of the hill without pulling a back muscle despite the need for some brutal bar-wrenching and weight shifting to maintain traction. The mud-fest that used to be Scotland Road needed to be walked along in parts, which was a shame as in the summer this is a pretty good descent but I was eventually on the moorland track above Nangreaves and heading up towards Edenfield. Down into Irwell Vale, across the road to climb Robin Hood’s Well to Holcombe Moor then along the rocky track to the Maggot Farm. The persistent rain this week has turned the little streams that run across this trail into raging torrents of water – ankle-deep (No way was I riding across them) and with a current. Awesome.

By now my brakes really were non-existent, the organic pads in the front brake were being worn away at an alarming rate (I’d forgot I had organics in there to be honest), after braking more than twice I was having to stop to adjust the calliper. Eventually I just gave up on this and instead got my foot ready to do an emergency unclip to brake with that instead. Just as worrying were the funny noises emanating from my freehub….

Just as I got to the road to start the final leg of the ride, my main lights packed in, leaving me with just the helmet lamp to guide me through the late night traffic. My spare battery for the HID lamp seems to have a loose connection again. That was handy. Grrr.

I arrived home just before midnight, drank a pint of chocolate milk and went to bed…but not before I’d watched a video clip of me at the Manx End to End that was broadcast on Sky Sports 3 the other night. Amy very kindly posted it on the Internet, Brant then put it on the Ragley site. 6 seconds of fame at last. I’ll get to see the whole programme eventually, with any luck

The original plan involved me riding over the Lancs/Yorks border, through the Calder Valley and to Brighouse for the ‘cross race, however this wasn’t going to work due to Rachael’s karate lesson. So we drove over, I would then race then ride back. I was really looking forward to the ride home – I’d got the route clear in my mind after I drove home the same way from Huddersfield last week – it included some ace roads, through villages with ace names (like Barkisland) and some big climbs such as Blackstone Edge. I wasn’t really looking forward to the race though, not sure why. Probably the horrendous feeling of nausea I experienced at the Boggart Hole Clough race a couple of weeks ago was pecking my head a bit.

Once we arrived I bumped into Chipps with his Ibis uber-bike, Tim was there with his camera (hence the photo above) and Dave had also arrived, looking ‘full factory’ with 2 bikes

After a rolling start the fun began. The course was dead good – mainly woodland singletrack, short steep ups and downs, slippery off-camber bends, a gravel trap, a flight of wooden steps and plenty of roots to test one’s knowledge of correct tyre pressures…

What followed was an hour of sweat, pain, snot, stupidly high heart rates and the taste of blood in the throat. A bit like interval training but with just one really long interval. I came to grief once, right in front of Deb, Michael and the kids, slamming to the ground with a complete lack of grace and grip on a bend that was threatening me from the start – each lap I was getting more and more confident and as such the inevitable encounter with the ground got closer and closer – the crash resulted in a load of mud up the side of my leg and a bent-inwards brake lever so I had to ride the remainder of the race with a wonky hand.

It was a least lap 5 before I was lapped I think, although that might be wrong. No idea how badly I did because the results aren’t out yet but I don’t care about that really. If I can do a few of these and get better at them that’s great, but it’s good just to do something so intense that it’s hopefully going to improve my ‘top end’ in the long-term.

After the race I had a quick cuppa, a quick natter, a quick change of jersey, put some lights on the bike and set off for home. The route eventually climbed Blackstone Edge, down towards Rochdale and then home a couple of hours after I’d set off. I didn’t need the lights until the last few miles but by then my front brake was completely useless, which made negotiating the roundabouts in Middleton very intereresting.

At the moment the next cyclocross race in my diary is a month away (followed by another one the day after!), but in contrast to this morning’s state of mind I’m actually already looking forward to it….

During that race I didn’t really have the time to think about how good (or bad) the bike rides, how it felt on my shoulder, what it looked like…I just had to give it a thrashing. It was good then that a few things occurred to me yesterday at various points during the ride.

First of all, it feels very light. My Planet X has got disc brakes and MTB hubs, so there’s a weight penalty there. The Rodwell is at least a couple of pounds lighter than the Planet X and that becomes obvious when climbing and also when shouldering the bike. The Froggleg brakes are nowhere near as good as the Avid discs, especially when they’re wet, but I can (just about) cope with that.

The shape of the top tube is extremely shoulder-friendly. I’ve got an old shoulder injury after a car accident several years ago so if something carried on it isn’t comfortable I get punished. I can carry this bike on my shoulder for hours I reckon – the flat and wider shape of the top tube, near to the junction of the down tube is really well thought-out.

The horizontal top tube makes it easier to get on your shoulder quickly whilst moving. I wasn’t expecting a horizontal top tube to make much difference, but it does. It’s definitely easier to get on the shoulder whilst running towards an obstacle and I have to assume it’s because there’s more room to do so.

It’s comfortable to ride – apparently alloy frames are supposed to be harsh and unforgiving… this one isn’t. Perhaps that’s more a combination of tyres/wheels as well as the compliance of the frame, but there’s none of the smashing over rocks and bad roads that I had with the PX.

Next weekend I’m going to have a go at racing on this bike again, hopefully not ill this time.
